Balancing Career, Life, And Family

Career - Life - Family

It's sort of funny how these are the major themes and threads of life, yet I have found myself neglecting their overlap, time and time again.

Well, you could say that today was the day I was reminded of the importance of the delicate balance and intricate relationships between:
  • Person
  • Family
  • Career
I received an e-mail from a former associate who reminded me of what is important - the precious time we have with our families.

I received a second e-mail from a dear friend and colleague, who is struggling with the balance of early career demands, along with both personal and career interests, and the desire to begin a family. His words couldn't have been clearer when he wrote, "I am NOT the same calm, relaxed person you know me to be."

Words couldn't be truer...

Balancing the demands of person, family, and career can become quite stressful rather quickly.

It's not unreasonable to feel:
  • Overwhelmed
  • Burnt Out
  • Lost
  • Helpless
  • Hopeless
  • Confused

In fact, it's far too easy to fall into this trap.

Resolving The Stress:

  1. Set goals.
  2. Take action.
  3. Clarity!!!

Although it's listed 3rd above, Clarity is the most important step in resolving stress and making the most of the time we have, to accomplish the things we want.

It's called "Knowing Your Why!"

Knowing "Why" you do something, and being 100% clear about your "why" can quickly and easily resolve and relieve the uncertainty and stress you feel from trying to accomplish your personal, career, and family goals.

These 3 different spheres overlap and compete.

Knowing "Why" you do something - the reason(s) that help you get out of bed each and every day will keep you focused.

So before you continue with your day, spend some time right now answering "WHY?"

  • Why do you do what you do?
  • Why do you work each and every day?

Along with answering "Why," you also need to consider "What."

What do you want to be doing, and why do you want that?

As always, I want to hear from you. Please contact me with any questions or comments you might have.

Articles, Articles, Articles...

Things have been a little quiet around here...

Since formally introducing and announcing Clinical Practice Innovations, I have been working feverishly in the background to get a little momentum generated.

I have a lot of exciting things planned for this website - and for those of you who are really interested in learning all about how you can reinvent and innovate your practice methods.

If there is one thing I firmly believe in here, it's the power of YOU.

I believe in the things you have to share with your clients and the people around you.

As a brief sidebar, I developed this website and business with the sole purpose of passing on my passion and energy for the field of psychology to you.

I have always believed that mental health professionals possess a gift based on understanding, compassion, and empathy. People everywhere are struggling with some issue, problem, concern, difficulty, etc...

And what do we do? We help them. We support them, and we help them work through whatever it is they are dealing with.

What does this all mean?

We need to be creative and we need to distribute this information.

And that is something I want you to consider.

One of my main methods of sharing information will be through writing short articles on topics related to practice building, practice development, practice marketing, and practice options.

I will be writing articles on a regular basis that will be available to you.

I have chosen, primarily, to post these articles at http://www.ezinearticles.com/

You can find my articles directly by following this link: http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rory_F._Stern,_PsyD

While you are there, I encourage you to look around and see what other people are offering - and how other people utilize the power of writing.

Most of all - I would ask you to consider sharing your knowledge with the world.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Delays and Making Progress

This business about websites and getting started truly is remarkable...

When I first set a goal of getting my website up and running on June 14th, little did I account for all the glitches, tweaks, and editing that would occur. It is amazing how much "stuff" really goes into this process.

I never imagined that designing and building a website would be that difficult or time consuming.
Did that last sentence hit you like it hit me (just as I wrote it)?

This is a common thread I have found when I first started brainstorming about my business. My actual beginning process immediately reduced my chances for success.

Unfortunately I did not know that until 6 - 12 months later.

What was I doing?

Well - I was doing a lot more things that weren't working than things that were working. I continued to focus on projects that were getting nowhere, rather than working on or taking steps on projects that would get me somewhere.

You want specifics?

I can't even begin to tell you how many hours and days I wasted staring at a blank page in my "Notepad" and in Microsoft Frontpage.

I actually believed that I could create a website from scratch - and all this without knowing what I wanted to create.

Even worse, I never reached out for help beyond the extent of a book - a book that couldn't talk to me or give me advice or even show me the ropes.

The real difference came when I took a chance, spoke with a web designer, and started moving forward.

From then on, life has been all about working smarter rather than harder. And it is working out in ways that I dreamed of - but wasn't certain would ever happen.

And, I almost forgot - keep your eyes posted over the next week (5 - 7 days) for the "live" announcement of my site.

Apparently We Don't Work Enough

According to Donny Deutsch, chairman, host, and semi-celebrity "the happiest people in the world are the ones who work the hardest."

Not only that, he continues to say, "The happiest people love their work and there is NO substitute. End of story."

This past Monday morning, June 25th, Donny Deutsch was a guest on NBC's Today Show, along with recent best-selling author, Timothy Ferriss - "The Four Hour Work Week."

Mr. Deutsch's comments were in direct response to the author's notion and concept that the American people work too hard.

If you have been playing on the Internet in marketing circles, then you might be familiar with this newly released, NY Times best selling book. I have not read the book yet, myself, but after hearing one of Tim's many teleconferences about work-ethic and how he wrote his book - I will be running out to my local bookseller to get a copy.

I would encourage you to do the same. He has a great message to share and he doesn't hold back.

WATCH the video of this NBC interview at www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog. You can also check out his book at http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/.

Just click on the video capture and away you go!

The numbers, statistics, and interview speak for themselves.

I don't know about you - but I am NOT working 40+ hours a week, and I consider myself to be one of the happiest people.

I can see my headline now:

"Who else wants to work 90 hours a week, make
truck loads of money, have all their dreams come
true, become a well respected authority and expert,
and yet NEVER have peace of mind or the freedom
to enjoy it?"

A Whole New Beginning

Welcome everyone!!!

This is the beginning of what I envision to be a very exciting time in both my life and in yours. If you have found my blog, then there must be a part of you who wants their practice and life to be different than what it has become. As clinicians and therapists, many of us have become all too familiar with:

  • INCREASED No-Shows

  • DECREASED reimbursement rates

  • NON-BILLABLE hours

  • SHRINKING INCOMES!!!!

For many of you - this is not the career you signed up for when you applied to graduate school. You are NOT earning the salary you envisioned when you signed up for student loan payments that rival a small mortgage.

Come with me and LEARN about the opportunities that exist for YOU!!!

Come LEARN how to REINVENT your practice methods and begin to once again LOVE the career you are so passionately devoted to.

I look forward to helping you innovate and reinvent your practice.
